Power, Privilege and The Purse
Power, Privilege and The Purse was a unified project with the entire High Tech High 11th grade class spanning roughly 2 months. Through this time we researched finances, loans, budgets, different inequalities in our society and how power and privilege has affected our society throughout history and to present day. To understand the wealth inequalities in our society we created financial plans and budgets on different wages, found the pros and cons to different loans and created infographics and graphs to show visually what we had learned. To understand more of the race inequalities we studied the Jim Crow laws and era along with learning what people consider the “New Jim Crow”. Separated into different groups we focused on specific inequalities including education, criminal justice, wealth inequality, gender inequality, immigration, and more and after watching documentaries and reading different people's opinions we began to form our own on the topic. Writing Position papers and speeches to describe or stand point and ways we believed we could fix these issues. Once done we worked as a grade to plan and fundraise to create a symposium. On November 19, 2015 we helpd “Mind the Gap” at the Vista Community Center where we raised discussed and raised awareness for inequalities plaguing our society today.
